This is something that I am very excited for! I have seen several Matthew Bourne ballets and every one brings something new.
The latest show from the New Adventures company is Sleeping Beauty, a fairytale I love and a show that I am definitely going to see!
Set to the beautiful score by Tchaikovsky, this is a gothic romance scanning the years, Perrault’s timeless fairy tale starts in a magical creature filled 1890 with Aurora being christened and the story begins. As a young girl Aurora is transported to the Edwardian Era of uptight costumes, croquet on the lawn and crazy social dances. When Aurora matures into a young woman and awakes from a hundred years slumber she emerges into the modern-day with all the twists and tales that the present world holds.
Matthew Bourne has joined forces with his well-known award-winning team of designers, Lez Brotherston, Paule Constable, Paul Groothuis, and New Adventures Associate Artists. I think the imagery for the marketing is incredible!
Previous shows such as Cinderella, Play without Words, Dorian Gray and of course the infamous Swan Lake have been rave successes and I am more than sure that Sleeping Beauty will be no different. Here is a trailer to get you excited:
Also here is a clip of Matthew Bourne talking about Sleeping Beauty heading to the Lowry:
